Dialogue held on quality of life in Dhaka

A virtual discussion about the quality of life in Dhaka city was held on Friday. The Lawyers and Jurists Foundation organised Digital Dialogue 12 in association with The Business Standard, read a press release.

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam participated in the discussion.

He outlined the main objective of the LGRD ministry as improving the quality of life of the people by strengthening local government systems plus implementing socio-economic and infrastructure development activities.

Further, the minister spoke about the strategies and planning systems to improve Dhaka city through his dream project – a waste-based power plant to clean up the mega city of Dhaka.

Taking part in the dialogue, Taqsem A Khan, managing director of the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa), spoke about the ways water is being supplied to urban areas and the significant roles of the government agency.

He further said Wasa is taking up immense initiatives to avoid disruptions that affect human health – concerns linked with diseases.

Dr AKM Rafique Ahammed, director general of the Department of Environment, also spoke at the discussion. He said Bangladesh is one of the first least developed countries to formulate a long-term climate change strategy.

AKM Rafique also spoke about growing a "Clean and Green Bangladesh." This goal can be achieved with many contributions of hard work from different sectors of the country and the involvement of other authorities.

Founder of The Lawyers and Jurists Foundation Barrister AM Masum, FCIArb, who practices law at the Supreme Court, also participated in the discussion.

Supreme Court lawyer Khandaker Asma Hamid Tashfia moderated the dialogue, coordinated by Nazmus Sakib, an associate of the Lawyers and Jurists.
