Rail communication of Dhaka with Chattogram and Sylhet remained suspended since Sunday morning after Hefajat leaders and activists hurled brick chips on the intercity "Sonar Bangla Express" train.

The train services were temporarily suspended from 9:30 am, according to officials.

As a result, several trains remain stranded in different stations, creating untold sufferings to commuters.

Confirming the matter, Akhaura Railway Police Officer-in-Charge Mazharul Karim said that the train services have been suspended on safety grounds.

Besides, the Sonar Bangla train is being taken to Bhairab railway junction station.

The Dhaka-bound intercity Upakul Express train is stuck at Akhaura railway station.

The Islamist group has enforced the nationwide hartal protesting over the deaths of its activists in Chattogram and Brahmanbaria in police action, and Bangladesh visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
