Dhaka North introduces ‘Push button’ for seamless road crossing
The system will primarily show green signal for 25 seconds for pedestrians to cross the road.
The Dhaka North City Corporation has installed an automated road crossing system "Push Button" at Asad Avenue in the capital.
Md Atiqul Islam inaugurated the road crossing system in front of Mohammadpur's Green Herald International School on Thursday.
At an event organised by the school, the mayor said, "Traffic police will monitor the CCTV cameras installed with the new traffic lights in front of the school to identify those who violate traffic laws."
For the installation of this automated zebra crossing, the footpath has been aligned with the road so that people of all ages and those with physical disabilities can cross it easily.
The system will primarily show green signal for 25 seconds for pedestrians to cross the road. Vehicles will be shown red signal during this time. Then 127 seconds will be provided for the movement of vehicles. In those 127 seconds, the green signal will not be provided for pedestrians even if someone pushes the button.
Two men from the school have been appointed to control the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on signals. In addition, this push button will be administered by the Green Herald School authorities.
Setting up of another such road crossing is almost over in front of the Brac University. These two crossings cost around Tk9,20,000.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have sent a demand list of 48 such digital crossings around the Dhaka city corporation area. On the basis on emergency, installation of 20 of them are in progress.
