Cyclone Yaas: Teesta water level rises in Lalmonirhat

The water level of the dry Teesta River has increased suddenly following downpour under the influence of Cyclone Yaas.
Fields of corn, nuts and vegetables on the banks of the Teesta have seen a substantial rise in water threatening the livelihood of farmers in the area.
However, Ashraf Ali, deputy director (DD) of the Lalmonirhat Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) claimed that there would be no damage as the water has been receding rapidly.
Rangpur Water Development Board (WDB) Deputy Assistant Engineer Iliyas Hossain said, the water level was 10 cm below the danger level of 52.60 cm on Saturday, which is alarmingly close.
But that water flow decreased on Sunday 9 am and is now flowing 52.20 cm below the danger level.
"The effect of cyclone Yaas started last Thursday on the Indian side upstream of the Teesta Barrage Irrigation Project in Hatibandha," said Rabiul Islam, executive engineer of the Dalia WDB, adding, "As a part of this, the water level in the Teesta rose all day on Saturday in Bangladesh too."
He claimed that the current flow of the water will further reduce by Sunday afternoon.
