Some muggers took Tk17 lakh from a businessman by stabbing him and detonating a bomb in front of United Commercial Bank Ltd (UCBL) in Jashore on Tuesday afternoon.

Additional superintendent of police Touhidul Islam said Enamul Haque, 25, younger brother of Iqbal Hossain, owner of Agamni Motors in the city, came to the bank on a motorbike at noon to deposit money. Another man named Emon accompanied him.

As they approached the bank, the muggers attacked Enamul, who was carrying a bag of money. He resisted when they tried to snatch the bag. The muggers then stabbed him in both arms, chest and abdomen and snatched the bag. They detonated a bomb as they were leaving. The bank's ATM booth was damaged in the bomb blast.

Enamul was seriously injured, and locals rushed him to Jashore General Hospital.

Tareq Shams, a doctor at the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, said Enamul's condition was serious and he has been shifted to Khulna for better treatment.

Jashore Kotwali Police Station inspector (Investigation) Tasmeem Ahmed and RAB officials have visited the spot. There are multiple CCTV cameras around the place. Video images are being collected from those cameras. Several teams of police have launched an operation to arrest the muggers, police sources said.
