In Chattogram, three police constables have been withdrawn from duty for allegedly torturing two children on allegations of theft.

The policemen are Md Mehdi, Md Mazhar, and Md Ehsan.

Shahadat Hussain, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Chattogram Metropolitan of Police, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard (TBS) on Sunday.

The incident took place in Lalkhan Bazar under Khulshi police station of Chattogram city on Friday afternoon.

Shahadat said after learning that a video of the incident went viral on Facebook Sunday, the three members of the police involved in the incident were withdrawn from duty.

The victims of the incident are residents of Lalkhan Bazar's Motijharna neighbourhood. One of the children was a class VII student at a local school.

According to locals, petty thefts often occur in Motijharna and vicinity. On Friday, three boys, including the two victims, were hanging out in the Lalkhan Bazar Government Primary School premises.

It was reported to the patrolling policemen that these children were involved in thefts in that area. The policemen chased the children and caught two of them while the other managed to escape.

Later, the policemen took the children to nearby Jilapir hill, tied them to an iron pole with a rope, and shaved the head of one of the boys.

A probe committee had been formed to investigate the incident, said Shahadat. Further action will be taken after receiving the committee report, he added.
