Suspected drug peddler killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in a so called gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The incident occurred at Gazipur’s Pubail area at around 2:15am on Friday. The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam alias Nazu, 30. A RAB officer, Probir Sarkar, was reportedly injured in the incident.

Speaking to The Business Standard, RAB-1 Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kamruzzaman said acting on a tip-off on a drug deal, a RAB patrol team conducted a drive in the Pubail area.

“The drug dealers opened fire at us when they realised we were there,” he explained, adding that they returned fire in response, killing Nazrul on the spot.

“We also recovered three shotguns, one pistol, a magazine, a round of bullets, and 2,500 yaba tablets from the spot.”

The suspect was later taken to the Shahid Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where the physician on duty declared Nazrul dead.

According to RAB, 12 cases was filed against Nazu with different police stations in Gazipur.
