Shopkeeper fined in capital for selling Savlon at higher price

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) on Tuesday fined a shopkeeper at the Karwan Bazar kitchen market for selling Savlon – an antiseptic liquid – at a price higher than the maximum retail price (MRP).

A DNCRP monitoring team fined the seller of Chatkhil store while he was selling the Savlon container for Tk400, though the MRP was printed as Tk220.

The team also visited some other markets and shops in Shantinagar and Gulshan areas of the capital, imposing on and collecting fines from other shops as they did not have price lists, sold products at a higher price, or sold expired products.

So far, Tk547,000 has been realised in fines from 141 shops by conducting monitoring drives in 98 wholesale and retail markets across the country. 

Monzur Mohammad Shahriar, deputy director of Dhaka divisional office, and deputy directors Md Masum Arefin and Bikash Chandra Das, among others, conducted the drives in Dhaka City Corporation and Savar upazila.

Nine DNCRP officials conducted the raids at 24 wholesale and retail markets in Dhaka and Savar. Besides, 61 other DNCRP officials conducted drives in 74 markets outside Dhaka.

"Regular and special monitoring drives of DNCRP, for Ramadan and the novel coronavirus outbreak, are underway across the country – including in Dhaka," said Babul Kumar Saha, director general of DNCRP.

He also urged importers, producers, wholesalers and retailers to save purchase vouchers, show price lists and sell products at fair prices.
