Sack containing Tk80 lakh disappears from National Bank vehicle

A sack containing Tk80 lakh has gone missing from a vehicle of National Bank in Old Dhaka.

Police said they were quizzing the driver, two security guards and an executive of the bank in connection with the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, told The Business Standard that Habibur Rahman, Bangla Bazar branch Manager of National Bank, had filed a case over the incident against unidentified people.

He said in the case filed by him that the vehicle was carrying sacks containing Tk3 crore in addition to the one containing the Tk80 lakh.

The vehicle was on its way to the main branch of the bank in Motijheel. When it reached Babu Bazar bridge area, security guards noticed that the sack of Tk80 lakh was missing. 

Police said it was mysterious that the sack of Tk80 lakh was missing from the vehicle even though those containing Tk3 crore remained there.

According to Kotwali police, the vehicle was carrying an official of the bank's head office and two armed security guards. Money was collected from different branches in Old Dhaka and the vehicle reached Bangla Bazar branch at around 1pm.

The security guards raised the alarm after noticing that the sack of Tk80 lakh was missing. The bank authorities subsequently filed a complaint with Kotwali Police Station. Police detained the four people who were in the vehicle for questioning.

Muntasirul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Lalbagh zone of police, told The Business Standard that the four talked in a mysterious manner during interrogation.  

He said police were trying to solve the case by collecting CCTV footage.

The bank authorities declined to comment as the matter was under investigation.
