The leader of a robber gang was killed in an alleged gun battle with the Detective Branch of police in Mymensingh's Gafargaon early today.

The deceased, Abdul Motaleb, 42, a resident of Gafargaon, had five robbery cases against him, police said.

Officer-in-Charge of the Detective Branch of police Shah Kamal Akond said a police team conducted a drive on Gafargaon-Rasulpur road around midnight after a tip-off that a group of robbers were preparing to commit robbery.

"Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate in self-defence. Abdul was wounded in the gunfight," he said.

Abdul was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered a pipe gun, 10 rounds of bullets and several bullet shells from the spot.
