A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has sentenced a physician to four months' imprisonment and fined him Tk1 lakh for issuing fake Covid-19 certificates to people in Sylhet.

The physician named AHM Shah Alam was also attending patients at his chamber after being infected by the coronavirus.

RAB-9 conducted the drive led by Executive Magistrate Sunanda Roy at the chamber on the ground floor of Medinova Medical Services in Modhu Shahid area in the city on Sunday night.

Sunanda Roy said, "Dr AHM Shah Alam confessed his crime during the interrogation. We have evidence against him. He will have to serve one month more imprisonment if he is unable to pay the fine of Tk1 lakh."

Additional Police Superintendent Samiul Alam of RAB-9 said, "The physician admitted that he had sold fake Covid-19 certificates to some people, including those who want to go abroad."

"He also identified himself as a doctor of Osmani Medical College Hospital. But he did not work in any government hospital," he added.

He was tested positive for coronavirus infection on July 14.

He took Tk4,000 from each of the people, who took fake coronavirus certificate for going abroad.
