An Islamic scholar was stabbed to death by a group of miscreants in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram on Sunday evening.

The deceased, Maulana Shayer Muhammad Shagor, 42, hailed from Shikolbaha union under Karnaphuli upazila.

Dr Kamal Uddin, physician of metropolitan hospital, said, "He died of excessive bleeding from head injury."

Earlier in the afternoon, four face-mask clad people took Shayer, who is also a traditional village physician, with them mentioning the treatment of a patient, according to the victim's elder brother Md Jafar.

Later he was rescued by the locals in a critical condition at around 9pm from Goalpara area of Chorlokkha union and was rushed to Chittagong Metropolitan Hospital, where duty doctor declared him dead.

"The murderers and the motive behind this killing are being investigated," said Mohammad Ismail, officer-in-charge (OC) of Karnaphuuli Police Station, adding that the dead body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy.

Rizia Begum, wife of the deceased, filed a murder case in this regard.
