Murder mystery solved after 7 years
CID arrested the murderer on 16 December, who gave a confessional statement before the court, admitting his involvement
The Criminal Investigation Department has unearthed the mystery of a murder that took place seven years ago in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur.
Seven years ago, the body of 13-year-old Fatema Khatun was discovered hanging from the ceiling at her home.
Family members and locals initially assumed suicide. Fatema's father Kalam Mia filed an unnatural death case with Pirganj police station.
Later, an autopsy revealed that Fatema had been pregnant and that she had been strangled to death.
Local police suspected 15 people in connection with the murder and tested their DNAs. But the victim's DNA report did not produce a match.
The mystery remained unresolved for around seven years.
Pirganj police station recently wrote a letter to the police headquarters, requesting a transfer of the case. The police headquarters then transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department, and the CID took charge of the case on 13 May.
Sheikh Nazmul Alam of the CID told The Business Standard, "After taking charge of the case, our officers visited Fatema's home and surrounding area several times. The victim was from a conservative family, which is why the investigation officer suspected that the girl was killed by a close relative."
The CID retested the DNA samples of seven individuals, including the victim's relatives, he continued, including that of a cousin of Fatema, Hasanur Jaman Shipon alias Tekka, whose DNA matched with the victim's.
"Shipon was finally arrested by the CID on 16 December. He gave a confessional statement before the court, admitting his involvement with murder," said Sheikh Nazmul Alam.
Ahsan Ullah, sub inspector and investigation officer of the case told TBS: "Shipon had an affair with Fatema. He raped her several times, which resulted in her pregnancy. But family members were not aware of all this."
He said Shipon married another girl a couple of months before the murder, and this instigated a quarrel with Fatema. On the night of the murder, Shipon entered Fatema's room, and strangled her to death.
Fatema's father Kalam Mia said his daughter was a madrasah student, and never divulged that she was pregnant. We found out about her pregnancy only after receiving the medical report. But the local police station was unable to solve the case.
"The CID recently solved the case. The murderer has been arrested, and I still cannot believe that it was Shipon who killed my daughter. I demand that he be given capital punishment," he added.
