Junior railway auditor held in Chattogram over Tk 1crore embezzlement
Railway authorities have detained a junior auditor from Chattogram on charges of embezzling Tk 1 crore from the accounts of the employees of the Eastern Railway Department.
Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB) detained Faisal Mahbub, 35, the junior auditor of Eastern Railway's Pahartali Accounts Branch, on Saturday night (8 May ) for embezzling money.
According to railway sources, the railway accounts are saved through a software. On Friday, it was found that there was shortage of over one crore of money.
He was later arrested as preliminary investigation found evidence of embezzlement.
Jahangir Hossain, general manager of Eastern Railway, told The Business Standard that they are now counting how much money Faisal had embezzled.
"we have come to know that more than 1 crore money has been embezzled," he said.
Mahbub is currently in the custody of the railway.
The process for filing a case is underway.
A two-member probe committee was formed on Sunday.
The committee will submit report within the next 3 days.
RNB chief Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan said that in the initial interrogation, Faisal had confessed that he opened a fake account for withdrawing Tk 1 crore through digital fraud.
According to railway sources, Faisal Mahmud joined Pahartali Finance and Accounts Branch in 2012 as a junior audit officer.
From September 2020 to March this year, he embezzled the money of the officers of the Eastern Region by entering his own account number instead of the prescribed account.
