Four traders at Khatunganj fined for raising ginger price

Four traders of Khatunganj, Chattogram were fined Tk3 lakh today for hiking the price of ginger by hoarding it illegally.
A mobile court fined one Shah Amanat Trading with Tk1 lakh for illegally hoarding 12 tonnes of imported ginger at a nearby warehouse of betel and nuts. Meanwhile, Ekota Traders and Shahadat Traders were fined Tk50 thousand each. Another trader named Mahbub Khan Saodagar was fined Tk1 lakh.
All of them were involved with a syndicate of dishonest traders who had illegally hiked the price of ginger at the country's largest wholesale commodity market.
The mobile court was headed by Touhidul Islam, executive magistrate of Chattogram district administration.
He told The Business Standard, "An importer named Azad Traders has illegally hoarded ginger and forced traders to sell the item according to their fixed rate. They resorted to paperless black-marketing to hike the price."
Sensing the mobile court drive, owners and employees of Azad Traders eloped from their office, Touhdul Islam said, adding, "We will request the commerce ministry to cancel their trading licence."
Members of Bangladesh Army and the Chattogram Metropolitan Police also accompanied the mobile court team.
