A rebel councilor candidate of Awami League and his 25 supporters have been arrested from Pathantuli area in the port city over AL factional clash centering Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) polls that left one dead on Tuesday night.

The arrested rebel candidate is Abdul Quader, also a member of the convening committee of city Jubo League.

An Awami League activist Ajgar Ali Babul, 52, a resident of Pathantuli area, was shot dead and another youth Mahbub sustained bullet injuries in the factional clash around 8pm at Moghpukur area of Pathantuli ward.

After the incident, police conducted drives to different areas from 10pm to 1am and arrested them, said Officer-in-Charge of Double Mooring Police Station Sadip Kumar Das.

Abdul Quader was arrested from his house, said the OC.

The supporters of the Awami League-backed councilor candidate Nazrul Islam Bahadur and the rebel candidate Abdul Quader exchanged gunfire during the clash, leaving Ajgar dead on the spot and Mahbub injured the bullet.

The injured youth was Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said the OC.

Nazrul blamed the rebel candidate Abdul Quader for the incident.
