The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police claimed to have busted a fake mask making racket, arrested five people and seized 140,000 pieces of such masks.
"A special team of CID has arrested five people and seized the Sunrise Bag Company in Old Dhaka's Narinda area where the masks were being produced," Jisan Haque, senior assistant superintendent of CID Media wing said.
The arrestees are Khalid Imran, owner of the company, Rehan Yusub, Abdul Sobhan, Jitu Chandra Das and Osman Gani.
Earlier, CID got information that a vested quarter was making fake masks at the Sunrise Bag Company in Old Dhaka after the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
Later, in the drive led by CID Additional Superintendent of Police Rajiv Farhan, the CID team also seized 140,000 pieces of masks worth about Tk21,000,00 and 1,000 kilogrammes of fabrics for making masks whose market price is Tk250,000.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestees said through contractors, they have been supplying such masks to various organizations for long, Jisan Haque added.
The CID has filed a case with the Wari police station in this connection.
The drive will continue to bust such illegal mask factories and arrest the culprits, he further said.
