CID busts public exam question leaking gang

The Criminal Investigation Department of Police recently arrested the members of a gang allegedly involved in leaking question papers of public university admission and bank recruitment tests.

"The gang earned Tk4.5 crore to Tk5 crore through leakage of question papers of Dhaka University's 'A' unit admission test in 2018 and different bank recruitment tests," claimed CID's Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Kamrul Ahsan at a press briefing on Tuesday.

He said we have arrested six members of the gang, including the mastermind, from Dhaka and Rajshahi recently, for their alleged involvement in bank recruitment and admission tests forgery using digital devices.

The arrestees are Senior Officer of Agrani Bank in Rajshahi Manik Kumar Pramanik, Senior Officer of Janata Bank Raqibul Hasan, Raseduzzaman Sajib, Hasan Mahmud, Safiqul Islam, and Ripan Kumar.

Raqibul is a former student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Dhaka University.

According to CID, as part of a premeditated plan, a member of the gang used to join the pre-scheduled exam. As soon as the test started, he used to share a photo of the question paper to a Whatsapp group. Getting the question paper, other members of the gang then answer the questions in 15-20 minutes.

The CID official said in the group, one member used to answer the questions of one subject. Thus answers to questions of Bangla, English, Math and General Knowledge were resolved separately within a few minutes by separate members of the group.

"The members then shared the answers of each subject to the secret Whatsapp group from where fixed examinees – who had already paid the gang to get access to the secret group – collect the answers sitting inside the exam hall with a smartphone," said Ahsan, adding that the fixed examinees used to answer 80-85 questions out of 100 to avoid suspicion of the examiner.

The CID official said that one DU admission seeker Nafisul Islam was arrested from Tejgaon Centre in 2018, after he was caught red handed copying answers from his smartphone inside the examination hall. The university authorities then filed a case with Tejgaon police station.

"While investigating the case, CID succeeded in tracing the gang. We first arrested Raseduzzaman and Hasan from Malibagh area on December 22. Raseduzzaman confessed before the court that the then Dhaka University student Raqibul involved him with the group.

"Raseduzzaman was a teacher of Saifur's Coaching Centre. His task was to solve English questions after getting the leaked question paper through the Whatsapp group.

"On his information, CID arrested Raqibul, a senior officer at Dilkusha Branch of Janata Bank in the capital on Sunday. Raqibul also made confessional statement before the court.

"Later, a team of CID arrested the gang leader Manik along with his two accomplices from Mohanpur area of the city on Thursday. Manik used to contact potential candidates of university admission and bank recruitment tests.

Kamrul said that they were now trying to identify the students and job holders who enrolled in different universities and joined government jobs with the help of this gang.
