The counter terrorism and transnational crime unit (CTTC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested a listed top terrorist from the Pallabi area of Mirpur in the capital on Monday.
The arrestee Mofizur Rahman Mamun is accused in 27 cases including extortion, murder, use of illegal arms and robbery, and sentenced to life-time imprisonment, the DMP said in a press release.
Also, 15 arrest warrants were was issued against him in several cases.
DMP sources said the CTTC learnt that a gang was trying to collect illegal arms in order to create unrest in the country through targeted killings.
"Considering it a militant activity, the CTTC started a shadow investigation on the matter. Following the investigation police, arrested Mamun on Monday morning."
Mamun used to control Mirpur's underworld in the past, the DMP press statement notes.
He was arrested and sentenced to jail in 2001. He came out of jail in 2004 on bail, and absconded to India. There he was arrested for holding a fake passport and entering to the country illegally through border in 2008 and was sentenced to prison for 10 years.
After his release, he communicated with two other underworld terrorists— Ibrahim and Shahadhat— living in Dhaka and tried to control criminal activities including extortion in the Mirpur area.
Mamun would threaten to kill businessmen through mobile call and demanded huge money from India.
Police said he came back from India to establish their "empire" in Dhaka.
