A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced four people to life imprisonment for killing a college student in 2013.

The convicts – Lalin Bapari, Shahabuddin Darjee, Rejaul Bapari and MM Faisal – have also been fined Tk20,000 each.

In failure, they have to spend two months more behind bars.

The speedy tribunal, however, acquitted a fifth accused, Mahiuddin Darjee, as the prosecution could not prove charges against him.

According to the prosecution, victim Ohiduzzaman Bapari had married a woman. Convict Rejaul was in love with the woman.

Failing to marry her, Rejaul planned to kill Ohiduzzaman.

On March 6, 2013, the accused tactfully called the victim out of his home and took him to a maize field in Singair upazila of Manikganj and strangled him to death.

Police later filed a murder case against six people with Singair police station.

In 2014, detective police pressed charges and the court framed charges against the accused in November 2016.

Judge Md Monir Kamal of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 recorded testimonies of 22 out of 42 prosecution witnesses.

Two convicts – Rejaul and Mahiuddin – have been absconding.

A sixth accused named Sailm died during the trial.
