The police solved all three cases within a week

A teenager named Siam Sheikh was smoking in the presence of his cousin Rakib Sheikh, 24, at the Monipur area of Mirpur in the capital on July 9. Rakib became angry and hit Siam on the chest, which left Siam unconscious. Later, Rakib strangled Siam to death and hid the dead body in a septic tank that night.
Siam is one of three people killed in only three days (July 6-July 9) in Mirpur, and the police solved all three cases within a week, said Moinul Islam, an assistant police commissioner of Mirpur zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Rezaul Karim, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station, told The Business Standard that Rakib absconded after the murder. After the police arrested him from Barek Mollar Mor at Mirpur, he confessed to killing his cousin before court, and revealed where he had hidden the dead body. Based on the information, the police recovered Siam's body from the septic tank.
The victim's father Abul Bashar Sheikh has filed a case against Rakib and his parents.
Meanwhile, the same day, Shihab Sumon, a labourer of Anirban Builders, killed Habibur Rahman, a contractor of the company.
Habibur's family members said Habibur had ordered Sumon to do something but he did not want to do it, which led to them getting into a scuffle. At one stage, Sumon kicked Habibur who fell from the fifth floor of the under-construction building.
The police recovered the dead body from the spot and arrested Suman.
Habibur's wife Shamsur Nahar has lodged a case at Mirpur Police Station over the killing. Sumon has given a confessional statement before court, according to the police.
Masud Alam, son of Habibur, told The Business Standard that he has five siblings. His father was the only earning member of the family.
"We don't know how our family will survive in the coming days," he said.
