Police detained two persons from Gazipur's Tongi on allegation of selling used masks and hand gloves after washing.

The detainees are Imran, 45, and Lal Miah, 45, Somoy TV reports.

Police conducted a drive in Tongi's Station Road area Wednesday afternoon and detained the duo.

Some 2.5 sacks of masks, huge amount of blood-stained hand gloves and six bottles expired chemicals were seized from their possession.

They rented the house of Abed Ali two months ago. There is a warehouse containing abandoned medical supplies.

Sub inspector of Tongi East Police Station Shuvo Mondol said, "The members of the gang collected used masks, hand gloves and expired chemicals by giving a nominal price to dishonest nurses and workers of government and private hospitals of nearby areas including Tongi, Gazipur and Uttra."

"The mask and hand gloves were then washed with shampoo and dried in the sun. They sold the items at higher price after ironing them," he added.

"Demand of masks and hand gloves increased due to the coronavirus outbreak, so they took the opportunity. A case will be against them under the Consumer Protection Law for harming people by selling adulterated products," the official added.
