The Anti-Corruption Commission has filed two separate cases against two union parishad (UP) chairmen of Barguna and Barisal on charges of embezzling around 31 metric tonnes of rice meant for distribution among fishermen under the government's Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme.

ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said the cases were filed on Thursday with the commission's integrated district offices in Barishal and Barguna.

ACC Deputy Director Debabrata Mandal filed a case against Kazi Shahidul Islam, chairman of Andharmanik Union Parishad in Barishal's Mehendiganj upazila, allegedly for embezzling 3.84 tonnes of rice allocated for poor fishermen.

Meanwhile, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Arif Hossain filed another case against Aladdin Poltu, chairman of Kakchira Union Parishad in Barguna, also president of the Kakchira union unit Awami League, for misappropriating 27.5 tonnes of rice allocated for enlisted fishermen.

According to the FIR, Aladdin Poltu was supposed to distribute 44 metric tonnes of rice to 550 fishermen. But, he misapproprited the bulk portion of the allocation distributing 30 kilograms of rice instead of 80 kilograms allotted for each family.
