2 arrested with crystal meth in Ctg
Local claims tie Sakib to Jamaat, but party sources reject any current affiliation
Detectives of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have arrested two individuals along with 175 grams of crystal meth (commonly known as "ice") in the city's Panchlaish area last night (4 May).
The information was confirmed in a press release issued by CMP today (5 May).
The arrestees were identified as Md Sajjadul Rahman Sakib, 27, and Md Abu Faisal, 26.
According to the press release, acting on a tip-off, a team from the Detective Branch (North) conducted a raid last night at a space named "Creators Hub" on the seventh floor of the Finlay Square building in the 2 no gate area under Panchlaish Model Police Station.
The two were detained while preparing to store and distribute drugs, and the estimated market value of the drugs was around Tk17.5 lakh, the press release said.
During initial interrogation, they claimed they had collected the drugs from an Oman-based trafficker from Fatikchhari and brought them to the city for distribution.
Allegations have surfaced linking Sakib to Jamaat-e-Islami. Some locals claimed he held a responsible position within a local unit of the party.
However, party sources said he currently holds no position or organisational responsibility and is not actively involved.
Fatikchhari Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Nazim Uddin said Sakib has no affiliation with the party. "He was involved in student politics with Islami Chhatra Shibir during his college years, but he is not currently engaged in politics and holds no position," he said.
Police said a case is being processed with the concerned police station, and efforts are ongoing to identify the wider drug trafficking network.
