Writ seeks Tk1 crore compensation over actress Asha’s death

A writ has been filed with the High Court seeking compensation for the family of actress Asha Chowdhury who was killed in a road accident at the capital's Technical Intersection on 5 January.

Anisur Rahman, who filed the petition on behalf of Asha's mother, told reporters on Monday.

The writ also sought a ruling directing the formation of an independent investigation committee to identify the people responsible for the accident.

It will be produced before the High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam for a hearing, said lawyer Anisur.

Secretary of the Road Transport and Bridge Ministry (Road Transport and Highways Division), Dhaka North City Corporation mayor, chief executive officer of Dhaka North, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BTRC) chairman, and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, among eight people, have been made plaintiffs in the writ.

Asha made her debut in the entertainment industry four years ago through acting in a drama. She was then listed with Bangladesh Television as an actress.

Asha, who was the eldest among four siblings, was a student of the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT). She was from Pabna. 

On 5 January, a truck hit the motorbike she was riding at the capital's Technical Intersection.

She fell onto the road and sustained severe injuries to her head. She was rushed to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.
