Writ seeks prayer space at mosques for women across country

Supreme Court Lawyer Mahmudul Hasan on Tuesday filed a writ petition seeking High Court direction to the authorities concerned to ensure special prayer space for women at all mosques across the country.
The secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Islamic Foundation Director General have been made respondents to the writ.
The hearing on the writ is likely to be held with the bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam next week, writ petitioner Mahmudul Hasan said.
Mahmudul Hasan told media that Article 41 of the Constitution has provision for the right of every citizen to profess, practice or propagate any religion. But the Muslim women are facing discrimination.
"The centre point of practising Muslim religion is the mosque. It has given equal rights for men and women to practise religion inside the mosque," the writ states.
The writ also said that women in Bangladesh are facing discrimination although they have equal rights as per the Constitution.
Measures should be taken to arrange separate prayer space, ablution space and toilets for women at all mosques across the country, the writ petitioner said.
The references from The Quran and Hadith are included in the writ as logic for ensuring special prayer space for women, Mahmudul Hasan added.
