A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking to form a judicial inquiry committee to investigate the death of five workers in a police shooting at an under-construction coal-fired power plant in Gandamara union of Banshkhali upazila, Chattogram.

The writ also sought Tk3 crore as compensation for each deceased worker's family, and Tk2 crore for each worker injured.

On behalf of Ain o Salish Kendra, a human rights organization, advocate Syeda Nasreen filed the petition on Thursday.

Earlier on 18 April, in favour of the human rights organization, the same lawyer served a legal notice to the authorities concerned, asking for appropriate action to be taken against those involved in the incident.

On 17 April, five workers were killed and 21 others injured during a clash with police at the under-construction power plant.

Later, another worker died of bullet injuries on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
