Tk5cr compensation sought for Badda lynching victim
Renu was beaten to death by a mob that suspected her as a child-lifter
A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Sunday seeking Tk5 crore compensation to the family of Taslima Begum Renu who had been killed by a mob over rumour of child-lifting in Dhaka’s Uttar Badda.
Supreme Court lawyer advocate Ishrat Hasan also petitioned that Tk10 lakh of the amount is given to Renu’s family within 15 days as an immediate compensation.
The lawyer further sought the High Court’s directives to make separate laws for punishment of mob lynching and removal of Facebook posts containing rumours.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal is likely to hear the petition on August 4.
Secretaries to the Cabinet, the home, law and information ministries, the inspector general of police (IGP), the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the officer-in-charge of Badda police station were made respondents to the writ petition.
Taslima Begum Renu was beaten to death by a mob that suspected her as a child-lifter in front of Uttar Badda Government Primary School, where she had gone to inquire about the admission process for her four-year-old daughter.
