Suspended DIG Prisons Partha indicted in graft case

A Dhaka court has formed charges against Partha Gopal Bonik, the suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) Prisons of Sylhet Central Jail, in a bribery and money laundering case on Wednesday. 

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10 rejected Partha's plea for acquittal and ordered to frame the charges. At the same time, the court set 18 November for the hearing of witnesses.

The suspended DIG Prisons was produced in the court during the hearing.

Senior lawyer Ehsanul Haque Samaji stood for Partha while Mahmud Hossain Jahangir, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer, prayed for the framing of charges against the accused.

It is mentionable that Partha Gopal was interrogated from the morning of 26 July last year based on graft allegations, and a raid was conducted at his Green Road residence in the afternoon. During the raid, Tk80 lakh was recovered.  

Later, he was shown arrested on the same day. The next day, the court ordered him to send to jail. Partha has been in jail since then.

On 24 August, Md Salahuddin, the investigation officer of the case and deputy director of ACC, filed a chargesheet against Partha in the court.

On 31 August, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes accepted the chargesheet. After fixing the hearing date, the judge ordered the transfer of the case to Dhaka Special Judge Court-10.
