Kurigram journalist Ariful Islam Rigan has been released from jail following a district court order granting bail to him, a day after a mobile court sentenced him to one year in jail.  

Earlier in the day, Additional District Magistrate Mohammad Sujauddaula granted him bail upon Tk25,000 bail bond.

Earlier, a mobile court sentenced Ariful Islam Rigan, a district correspondent of online news portal Bangla Tribune to one year in jail and fined him Tk50,000 for possession of liquor and hemp.

"A taskforce of police, Ansar, and Department of Narcotics Control arrested Ariful with 450ml local liquor and 100g hemp at midnight," said Rintu Bikash Chakma, executive magistrate of the taskforce.

But Ariful's wife Mostarima Sardar Nitu claimed that a group of law enforcers entered their home at Charuapara around midnight and took away her husband forcefully.
