A Dhaka court has set 22 December for the hearing on the Gatco corruption case filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Acting judge Nazrul Islam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court -3 set the date, allowing a time plea made by the defense on Wednesday.

The case was scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday. But prime accused Khaleda Zia failed to appear before the court on grounds of ill health.

Lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder, Zia Uddin Zia stood for Khaleda in the court. Her lawyer Hannan Bhuiyan confirmed the matter to reporters.

ACC Deputy Director, Golam Shahriar Chowdhury filed a case against Khaleda Zia and her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko and 13 others at the Tejgaon Police Station on 2 September 2007.

According to the charge sheet of the case, the accused helped Global Agro Trade (Pvt) Co Ltd (Gatco) to manage the latter's container handling work at Kamalapur Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Dhaka and Chittagong port, causing a loss of Tk14.56 crore to the state.

Seven of the 24 accused in the case have died, and the number of accused in this case now stands at 17.
