HC upholds verdict on NTV’s Atiq murder

The High Court today upheld a lower court verdict that sentenced one to death and life term imprisonment to two others for killing Atiqul Islam Atiq, a video editor of private television channel NTV.

A High Court bench of Justices Shahidul Karim and Md Akhtaruzzaman passed the order.

Assistant Attorney General Md Mehedi Hasan represented the state, while lawyer Fazlul Huq Khan Farid stood for the accused.

On June 24, 2014, a lower court sentenced Shakil Sikdar to death and Abdullah Mohammad Ibne Ali Sarkar Nahid and Md Forkan to life term imprisonment and a fugitive to three years' imprisonment for killing Atiq.

Atiqul Islam Atiq was shot to death on February 13, 2009 by muggers in Moghbazar area in the capital while he was on his way home.

Later, victim's brother Md Abu Bakar Siddik filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station on February 14.

On August 9, Investigation Officer of Detective Branch Inspector Abul Khayer submitted charge sheet against the accused.
