The High Court on Monday ordered a six-month suspension of the Education Ministry's order to drop the late president Ziaur Rahman's name from two high schools in Gabtali, Bogra.

The bench of Justices JBM Hassan and Khairul Alam passed the order today after hearing a writ petition. Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar, appeared for the writ petition in the court.

One school is Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Girls High School, later renamed as Sukhanpukur Bandar Girls High School; the other is Gabtali Shaheed Zia High School, renamed as Gabtali Purbapara High School.

The court also issued a rule asking relevant authorities (of the government) to explain in four weeks why the order to change the names of the two schools should not be declared invalid.

Kamrul Hasan, the deputy secretary of the ministry of education ordered the name change on 19 April. Two separate write petitions subsequently filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ruhul Quddus Kajal challenged the legality of the education ministry's order.
