BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has secured bail in nine cases filed with the Ramna and Paltan police stations over political violence in the capital.

Even so, he will not be able to walk out of jail right away, as he was denied bail in two other violence-related cases, including one filed over the attack on the chief justice's residence, according to Fakhrul's lawyer Syed Joynal Abedin Mezbah.

All 11 cases were filed against Mirza Fakhrul over political violence in Dhaka in relation to the BNP's 28 October rally, according to the defence lawyer.

Sultan Sohag Uddin, additional chief metropolitan magistrate of Dhaka, on Wednesday (10 January) granted bail on a Tk10,000 bond in the nine cases. Three of the cases were filed with Ramna Model police station, and the remaining six were filed with Paltan police station.

On Tuesday (9 January), Mirza Fakhrul was shown arrested in nine cases by the court after his lawyer submitted separate petitions in this regard.

On Wednesday the High Court denied bail to Fakhrul in a case filed over the attack on the chief justice's residence amid clashes at the party's rally on 28 October last year.

The HC bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order.

Defence lawyer Zainul Abedin said the decision to file an appeal will be taken after discussion.

The BNP secretary general was arrested and presented in court on 29 October in the case filed over the attack on the chief justice's residence.

Earlier on 13 December, defence lawyers filed bail applications in nine cases where Fakhrul was not shown arrested. The court advised taking the matter to the High Court in this regard.

Later, Fakhrul filed a writ in the HC challenging the validity of the non-acceptance of bail applications.

On 18 December, the HC directed the lower court to hear the bail pleas.

Then, on 31 December, a Dhaka court set 9 January for hearing Fakhrul's bail petitions in the nine cases
