Disabled child rape: HC wants to know updates

The High Court on Sunday wanted to know what steps have been taken against those who were involved in the rape of a disabled child and the settlement of the issue at Tk14,000 in arbitration in Phulbari Upazila of Dinajpur

The court also asked the concerned authorities to submit a report within next Sunday.

On a writ petition, the HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order.

The writ petition was filed by Barrister Md Abdul Halim based on news published on different newspapers about the incident.

According to media reports, the disabled child was raped by one Mehedul Islam, 35, when she was returning home from a local shop at Rambhadrapur residential area at Shibnagar union in the Upazila on July 3.

On the same day, the arbitrators forced the father of the victim to sign on a blank paper saying that he would not bring any charge against the accused.

The arbitrators fined him Tk14,000 for rape but the child’s father got only Tk7,000. The remaining money was distributed among the arbitrators.
