Councillor Razib placed on 14-day remand

A Dhaka court placed Tarequzzaman Razib, a councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation, on a 14-day remand in two separate cases early Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yasmin Ara passed the order after police produced him before the court with a plea of 20-day remand in narcotics and arms cases.

Recording officer and Sub-inspector of Vatara Police Station Liyakat Hossain said, "Police produced councillor Rajib before the court around midnight and pleaded for a 20-day remand in two cases."

Razib, who was joint general secretary of Jubo League's Dhaka North City Corporation unit, was expelled after his arrest on Saturday night.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Rajib, councillor of ward no 33 of the DNCC, from the capital's Bashundhara Residential area for his alleged involvement in extortion, terrorism and land grabbing.

Seven bottles of foreign liquor, three rounds of bullets, a foreign pistol and Tk33,000 in cash were seized from the house, where he took shelter.

Later, the RAB team conducted a drive at Razib's Mohammadpur residence and seized a cheque of Tk5 crore.        

According to local people, Razib exerted his political power to control satellite and drugs business in Mohammadpur.

They said he was involved in extortion and had bought eight apartments in Gulshan and Mohammadpur.

Razib also owns eight cars, including Mercedes, BMW and Land Cruiser Prado, said the local people.
