The Appellate Division Monday dismissed an appeal by the state challenging the life term sentence of Oishee Rahman, who murdered her parents in 2013.

The court, however, permitted Oishee to file a "leave to appeal" against her life-term sentence.

The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order.

Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state while Advocate Faisal H Khan stood for Oishee at the hearing.

A Dhaka court in 2015 sentenced Oishee to death for murdering her parents – police Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman.

In 2017, the High Court commuted the death sentence to life considering five circumstances.

Later, the state challenged the verdict at the Appellate Division.

Police recovered the bodies of Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their home in the capital's Chamelibagh in 2013.

Subsequently, Mahfuzur's brother Mashiur Rahman filed a murder case with the Paltan Police Station. On the same day, Oishee Rahman surrendered to the Paltan Police Station and confessed to killing her parents.

Police filed two separate chargesheets in 2014 naming Oishee and her two friends Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Jony. In another chargesheet, domestic help Khadija Akhter Sumi was accused. Later, Sumi was acquitted by a juvenile court.

Rony was sentenced to two years imprisonment while Jony was alos acquitted of the charges.
