Convicted “rapist” Islam released on bail after 19 years

Mohammad Islam, 49, got bail after serving 19 years from Jashore Central Jail on August 09.

Islam was sentenced to life in prison for not acknowledging his wife and son.

Previously, Mala and Islam got secretly married on February 13, 2000, in Jhenidah, Lakshmipur. Their son Milon was born on January 21, 2001.

Later, Islam denied the guardianship of Milon and also refused to recognize Mala as his wife.

Mala’s father then filed a rape case against Islam and a lower court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Islam filed an appeal with the High Court and then with the Supreme Court but the pervious order from the lower court was upheld both times.

Finally, Islam filed a review petition in the Appellate Division of SC and it granted him bail.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division of SC led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain ordered the bail.

Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal appeared for the accused in the court.

He submitted a DNA test report that proves Milon to be Islam’s son.

Earlier on July 31, as per Appellate Division of Supreme Court order convicted rapist, Islam, remarried his wife, Mala Begum, at the Jashore Central Jail. Their 19-year-old son Milon was also present during the wedding.

The Appellate Division of SC also ordered to inform the progress on the matter on August 25.
