The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) upheld life imprisonment of two persons who were convicted earlier by the High Court in a case filed over the sensational murder of child Rakib in Khulna in 2015.

A three-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Monday rejected the leave to appeal filed by the two convicts – Omar Sharif and Mintu.

With this order, the life imprisonment of the duo remains upheld, deputy attorney general Biswajit Debnath told reporters.

According to the case statement, Omar Sharif and Mintu killed Rakib, 12, by inserting a high-pressure air pump nozzle into his rectum and pumping air into his body in Khulna on 3 August 2015.

Rakib's father on 4 August filed a murder case with Khulna Sadar police station against Sharif, Mintu and Sharif's mother Beauty.

Later on 8 November 2015, Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate's Court sentenced Sharif and Mintu to death for killing Rakib after 96 days of the incident.

On 4 April 2017, the High Court commuted death sentences of the duo to life imprisonment after hearings on the death reference and jail appeals.

Then, the convicts filed a leave-to-appeal to the Appellate Division of the apex court.
