5 Jamaat leaders jailed for beating policemen and setting fire to vehicles

A Brahmanbaria court has sentenced five Jamaat-e-Islami leaders to two years in prison for beating policemen and setting fire to a police vehicle in Brahmanbaria. 
 
The verdict was announced by Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate Masud Parvez on Sunday noon.
 
The accused are Kazi Nazrul Islam Khadem, Golam Faruk, Jahidul Islam, Rustam Ali and Jahangir Alam Iqbal, read a press release issued by Brahmanbaria District Special Branch (DSB). 
 
According to the press release, a police truck laden with food was set on fire in the Pirbari area of ​​Brahmanbaria town during a strike on 4 December 2012.  The investigating officer of the case, Atiqur Rahman later submitted a charge sheet against 21 people.
 
On 10 October 2020, Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate Judge Masud Parvez sentenced all the accused to two years' rigorous imprisonment and imprisonment for an additional one month for non-payment of the Tk 2,000 fine.
 
The five leaders accused today surrendered to the court and were sent to jail after the verdict was delivered. 
 
Of the 21 accused in the case, 16 had already surrendered to the court previously and the judge had sent them to prison.
