12 remanded over journalist Muzakkir’s death

A Noakhali court on Monday placed 12 people on remand in a case filed over the death of journalist Muzakkir during a clash between two factions of Awami League and police in Companiganj.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 Justice SM Mosleh Uddin Mizan passed the order this noon when the investigation officer Mostafizur Rahman produced the accused people before it seeking three-day remand for each. 

Confirming the development, PBI Inspector Mostafizur Rahman told The Business Standard that after the hearing, the judge granted two-day remand.

The remanded accused are Yusuf Nabi Bahadur of Charfakira Union in Companiganj, Alamgir Hossain of the same area, Rahat, Azizul Haque Manik, Abdul Amin, Mosharraf Hossain, Sujayet Ullah Sabuj, Bikram Chandra Bhowmik, Faisal Alam Titu of Charkali village, Masudur Rahman, Selim and Delwar Hossain of Charkankar.

On 19 February, Muzakkir received bullet wounds while he was photographing and filming clashes between the supporters of Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza and former Companiganj upazila chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal, both local Awami League leaders.

Muzakkir, the Noakhali district correspondent of online news portal Barta Bazar was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died at 10:45pm on 20 February.

Muzakkir's father Maulana Nawab Ali Master, a retired primary school teacher, filed the case on 23 February.
