Serving people is responsibility, ideology of Awami League: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said it is the responsibility and ideology of the Awami League to serve people.

She has said that whenever people of Bangladesh fall in trouble, the Awami League stands beside them.  

She said this in the parliament on Thursday during an unscheduled discussion on the 73rd founding anniversary of the Awami League. 

This time also, the Awami League leaders and activists rushed to the flood affected people of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrakona before anybody else did, and helped them, she mentioned. 

Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League was established at the time when Pakistan showed its hostile attitude towards the people of East Bengal. 

"They (Pakistanis) tried to take away our rights to our mother tongue. They started exploitation and torture. In protest, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started the language movement from 1948, and founded the Chhatra League. The Awami League was formed in 1949. Since its inception, the Awami League has been struggling to establish the rights of the people of this country," said the prime minister.

Many leaders and activists of the party had to give their lives in the struggle of establishing the rights of people, she said. 

"Today I remember them all. I pray for the salvation of the souls of those who have died," said Sheikh Hasina.

Mentioning that Bangladesh would be a developed and prosperous country in future, the prime minister said she had made a plan for it. "If this continuity continues then no one will be able to stop it," she added.

She further said she came to the country after losing her parents and siblings. 

"At that time the Awami League selected me as its president. I came to the shelter of the people of this country. From them, I got the affection of my lost father, the affection of my lost mother and the affection of my lost brothers. So I am always ready to give anything for the people of this country," she said.
