Bail for Rashedul Chisty to remain stayed
A virtual High Court bench on May 20 stayed the bail that trail courts had granted to Rashedul the previous day
A virtual bench of the High Court said an order staying bail to Rashedul Haque Chisty, son of Farmers Bank's former director Mahbubul Haque Chisty alias Babul Chisty, in two cases filed over money laundering and amassing wealth illegally will continue until a hearing takes place at a regular bench.
The High Court bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim passed the order on Thursday.
On May 20, the same High Court after a virtual hearing on a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) stayed the bail that a trail court had granted to Rashedul the previous day.
Dhaka Special Judge's Court and Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court on May 19 granted bail to Rashed in two cases filed over laundering around Tk400 crore of illegally amassed wealth. Both hearings were conducted at virtual courts.
The ACC had filed a number of cases against Mahbubul Haque Chisty, former chairman of the bank's audit committee which has been renamed as Padma Bank, his son Rashedul Haque Chisty and a few other members of his family over allegations of graft.
Rashed is currently in jail after his arrest in 2018.
At Thursday's hearing, Advocate AM Amin Uddin placed his deposition on behalf of Rashedul Chisty while ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the corruption watchdog.
After the hearing, Khurshid Alam said the virtual court in its order had said the bail to Rashedul Chisty will remain stayed until a regular bench of the High Court holds a hearing on it.
