Consumer protection dept fines 60 entities Tk4 lakh

The department under the commerce ministry monitored 24 market places and settled two written complaints

The National Consumer Protection Department under the commerce ministry has fined 60 business entities Tk4,08,000 on Monday after conducting operations in 24 markets and settling two written complaints, says a press release on Tuesday.

During the monitoring activity of the capital's markets Bikrampur Mishtanno Bhandar and Mitu Sweets and Departmental Store were fined respectively Tk five and 10 thousand for not having the MRP stickers on products.

Baishakhi Bangla Restaurant and Prince Restaurant were fined Tk15,000 each for unhealthy kitchen environment.

On the other hand, 54 businesses around the country were fined Tk3,51,000 on the same day in 22 market places for manufacturing food products in unhealthy environment, not having MRP on product packaging, sale of expired products or drugs, adulteration of prohibited products in food, improper sale or delivery of promised goods or services, sale of adulterated products or drugs, manipulating weight measuring instrument, selling goods at higher price, health or loss of life of the consumers, activities endangering the life or safety of the service recipient, weight fraud, negligence in service delivery etc.

Two companies were fined Tk12,000 on the basis of two written complaints. Two complainants were paid Tk3,000 as 25% of the fine after the collection of the money.

The monitoring operations were led by 24 officers of divisional and district head offices of the National Consumer Protection Department at the markets of Dhaka city, Chattogram, Madaripur, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Barisal, Barguna, Jhalokati, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Bagerhat, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Panchagar, Rajshahi, Sirajganj, Pabna, Natore, Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat and Naogaon.
