Con man with currency of 46 countries held at Dhaka airport

Police on Saturday detained a man who conned passengers out of their money at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by posing as a foreign currency trader.

The detained man has been identified as Mintu Mia (35), son of Sadek Mia from Rupganj in Narayanganj.

Alamgir Hossain, additional superintendent of the Airport Armed Police, confirmed that they arrested Mintu at the airport at around 3:30pm.

Sources at the airport said that Mintu asked incoming passengers if they needed to buy foreign currency. He usually targeted naive passengers. If anyone gave him money, he snatched it and ran away.

The Airport Armed Police detained him while he was trying to find passengers to target.

On searching him police found that he had currency of 46 countries, which he used to convince his victims that he was a genuine dealer. The foreign currency has been seized.

Police handed him over to the airport magistrate court where he was charged for harassing passengers and being a public nuisance.
