Commemorative postage stamps, envelope released marking World Post Day
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam today released a commemorative postage stamp and an opening day cover on the occasion of World Post Day.
He unveiled the commemorative postage stamp of Taka 10 and the opening day cover of Taka 10 at the Posts and Telecommunications Division, said a ministry release.
A special canceller was also used on the occasion. Nahid Islam, also the adviser of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in a statement, wished all on the occasion of World Post Day.
He also unveiled the cover of the special album "Natural Beauty & Wildlife of Bangladesh Postage Stamps", containing pictures of rare postage stamps of the postal department at the event.
Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Dr Md Mushfiqur Rahman, Director General of Directorate of Posts S M Shahab Uddin and officials concerned were present.
On this day in 1874, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was formed with the participation of 22 countries in Bern Switzerland. In 1969, in the 16th session of the Postal Union, the proposal to declare October 9 as the world "Postal Union Day" was unanimously accepted by the organization to commemorate the day of the formation of the union.
Later, in the 19th session of the Universal Postal Union held in Hamburg, Germany in 1984, the name of "World Postal Union Day" was changed to "World Postal Day".
