Police have arrested Abdul Malek, a fraud ophthalmologist from Jhaudanga Bazar in Satkhira Sadar on Thursday.

The arrested fake eye specialist Abdul Malek, 55, is a resident of Madhumlalar Dangi area.

Local residents of the Jhaudanga said that Abdul Malek started to see the patients for the last one year after opening a chamber called Jhaudanga Pharmacy. The medical fee is Tk200. Last month, he advertised himself as an ophthalmologist and called for patients. At around 11am on Thursday, the villagers gathered at his chamber and demanded to see his medical certificates.

They also said that Abdul Malek could not show any documents at the time. He admitted that he studied up to class eight in Bangladesh and then left for India. There, he studied ayurveda and claims to have a certificate. However, he failed show that too.

Abdul Malek fell into a rage at the villagers. Then Sub Inspector Manik of Sadar Police Station rescued him to the police station.

About the incident, SI Manik said, "Abdul Malek said he studied in India. He has an Indian certificate of ayurveda medicine. Whether that's true is not verified yet. Action will be taken as per the directions of the higher authorities."

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman said the details would be published later.
