Armed robbers struck at Sonali Bank's Uthli branch in Jiban Nagar of Chuadanga in broad daylight today and decamped with Tk8.5 lakh in cash after holding employees and customers hostage at gunpoint.

"Three robbers entered the bank on Sunday afternoon wearing helmets. They first took the bank's security guards hostage with sharp weapons," said Abu Bakkar Siddique, branch manager of Sonali Bank in Uthli.

"All the officers and employees of the bank were locked in a room at gunpoint and the robbers forced the manager to reveal the location of stored money.

The robbers fled the scene on a motorcycle after robbing the bank," the manager added.

Upon receiving the news Jiban Nagar police rushed to the spot.

Abu Russell, assistant superintendent of police at Jiban Nagar Circle said, "I heard the details from the bank officials. The drive to arrest those involved in the robbery is underway."
