Police said they are looking for a Chinese woman who could give them a lead to the Chinese businessman murder investigation. Investigators claimed the woman, Sisi Liu, 34, a girlfriend of the slain Chinese citizen.
"Sisi rented the flat in November of 2018 and the duo used to meet at the flat," said Syed Mamun Mostafa, additional deputy commissioner (Gulshan Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The official said she remains missing since Tuesday.
Police recovered the body of Gao Jianhui, 47, from Dhaka's upscale Banani area on Wednesday afternoon. Gao's body was found buried at the residential backyard outside his home.
"It is a murder case. He was killed sometime Tuesday evening," Banani police Officer-in-Charge Nur-e-Azam Mia told the press.
His body bore many injury marks, he added.
Gao's family scheduled to reach Dhaka Thursday
Gao used to live with his family on the fifth floor of the 10-storey building. He was a stone supplier to the Padma Bridge project.
His family went to China around 20 days ago and they were scheduled to return on Thursday, said Sudip Kumar, deputy commissioner of Gulshan Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
In the meantime, The Business Standard reached the landlord of the slain Chinese citizen.
Shamim Khan, the house owner, said he made an agreement with Sisi Liu in 2018.
"Gao had been living here since then. Sisi used to visit him at the apartment," he said.
CCTV cameras were off
Although the building has close circuit television (CCTV) camera coverage, those were found shut off when Gao was murdered.
Sudip Kumar said, "Mysteriously the CTTV cameras were switched off at that time. It is still unclear as to what had happened to that man. We are investigating the matter."
Police primarily suspected feud over business as the motive and detained seven people for interrogation. They are mainly security guards and caretakers of the building.
