Chattogram Press Club elects new committee

240 out of 254 voters cast their votes in the election, while 31 candidates competed in the polls for 13 posts

Ali Abbas and Farid Uddin Chowdhury - also known as Chowdhury Farid - were elected president and general secretary of Chattogram Press Club respectively for a two-year term on Thursday.

The election took place at Chittagong Press Club from 10am to 4pm that day.

240 out of 254 voters cast their votes in the election, while 31 candidates competed in the polls for 13 posts.

Election Commissioner Omar Kaiser announced the official results around 8.30pm that day.

Ali Abbas, Chattogram Divisional Head of ATN Bangla, bagged 165 votes, while his nearest competitor, Reaz Haider Chowdhuri, bureau chief of daily Bangladesh Protidin bagged 70 votes.

In the meantime, Farid Uddin Chowdhury, Chattogram Bureau Chief of Channel I was elected with 180 votes, while Kazi Mohsin, Editor of Daily Soitto Bani, bagged 59 votes.

Other elected office-bearers of the press club are Senior Vice-President Shala Uddin Mohammad Reza; Vice-President SM Ibrahim; Joint Secretary Nazrul Islam; Finance Secretary Rashed Mahmud; Cultural Secretary Nasir Uddin Haider; Sports Secretary Devashish Barua Debu; Library Secretary Minthu Chodhury; Social Welfare Secretary Ayub Ali; Press and Publication Secretary Aliur Rahman; and four executive members Mujjemul Hoque, Monzur Kader Monju, Shahidulla Shariar and Debdulal Bhowmik.
